Ubuntu Beginner Administrator Terminal Reference

Know of some users who might be new to the terminal and are willing to explore? I’ve made a cheat sheet for beginners and experts alike of frequently used (and frequently forgotten) commands in Hardy, including from new applications like ufw. Check it out below!

Comments, suggestions? If you like it, pass it on!

Edit: I’ve reworded apt-get dist-upgrade, switched out xserver-xorg reconfigure and reworded description, and changed apt-get remove to purge.

Lets hope that the “willing to explore” part is appreciated when this is recommended to a newcomer.

I would change “apt-get remove” to “apt-get purge”. Perhaps to networking, add “/etc/dbus*/event*/25Network* restart” to kick network-manager in the pants. The “dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg” will no longer work — X is configured via XRandR now. As imbrandon says, “dist-upgrade” should be “upgrade with possible replacements” or something similar.

And, since I’m such a security junkie, I’d just leave out the (dangerous?) examples of running root-priv file browsers. But I’m just paranoid.

Linux for human beings? Where did that go?

Better remove the “Beginner” and replace it by “Admin” or something. My mom shouldnt have to know about this and she certainly would be an Ubuntu Beginner.

    Great stuff Jacob!
Certainly not for average non-savvy-comp moms and girlfriends. For all the rest: great sheet. People are able to think. Whoevers not able to think and learn how to help themself really has a problem nowadays.

Mackenzie just posted on her blog that dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is dead -

    http://ubuntulinuxtipstricks.blogspot.com/2008/04/faq-hardy-upgrade.html

The new Xorg is supposed to be all nice and hotplugable, but dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg is no more. /etc/X11/xorg.conf is also now very barebones. This is for the hotplugability. The correct way to configure this new version of X is with the xfix command. Changing resolution is done on the fly with xrandr.

But you’ve added it to your cheat sheet….

“aptitude upgrade” and “aptitude dist-upgrade” are deprecated, they are called “aptitude safe-upgrade” and “aptitude full-upgrade” now.

    > Ctrl+Alt+F7 – switch back to X display

Actually, only “Alt-F7″ is required for this. The Ctrl is unnecessary.
